Pointscore

Pointscore is the main weekly competition held by Albion Park Swimming Club. Pointscore is swum in heats but is actually a challenge for each swimmer to continuously improve and points are awarded based on the swimmers improvement over their personal best times.

There are separate pointscore competitions for males and females in each of the following events:

  • 25m/50m Age Group

  • 100m Open

  • 200m/400m Open

    Age groups for the 25m/50m pointscore are 0-6, 7-8, 9-10, 11-12, 13-17, 18+(Senior)

Age groups for the 2015/2016 pointscore season are based on the swimmers age on the 6th November 2015

Points will be scored as follows.

All swimmers are required to report directly to the marshal at the calling of the event they wish to swim.

The first swim for each event/distance in pointscore is a time trial. All times will be set as NT for the beginning of the season. In the following weeks swimmers are placed in heats of swimmers with similar best times. These heats are not races as swimmers are trying to improve their own times but being in a race atmosphere helps kids to swim faster.

If a swimmer in the time trial swims a time outside last seasons PB in that event by more than 3 sec, their seed time will be set at last seasons PB + 3 sec. If a competition swimmer from another club joins APASC and their time trial time is more than 3 seconds outside their best published time for that event, their seed time will be set as their best published time +3sec.

For swimmers with no PB available from previous seasons or competition results, the committee reserves the right to adjust times/points scored if they deem the time trial result slower than the swimmers ability suggests.

Note for 25m swimmers: If a swimmer records a time of 26sec or less for freestyle and 30sec or less for any other stroke in the 25m events they will be encouraged to move up to the 50m. If a swimmer does not move up after scoring consecutive sub 26sec or 30sec times in that event they will fail to gain extra pointscore points until they move up. The swimmer will still be entitled to receive points for race participation - this rule is to aid in the development of the swimmer to 50m events and prevents the 50m swimmers from being disadvantaged in the pointscore. When swimmers are ready to go up to the 50m for a stroke they can swim two swims for the same stroke on the one night, although points will not be awarded for the 50m swim which will serve as a time trial. Once a swimmer goes up to 50m for a stroke they cannot go back down to the 25m in that stroke. For example, if a swimmer goes up from 25m to 50m in freestyle they cannot swim 25m freestyle again, they can, however, still swim 25m for breaststroke, backstroke or butterfly if they have not swum 50m in these strokes. This rule applies to the 25m/50m pointscore competition only, 100m & 200m/400m are separate events - swimmers can swim the 25m/50m, 100m & 200m/400m in the same stroke. In the event that a swimmer is clearly not able to compete at reasonable times in the 50m events after progressing up from 25m then the committee at its discretion may put the swimmer back down to the 25m events with no loss of gained points.
